I wrote this on Saturday. I'm not completely sure whether all the drabbles in this table will take place in the same 'verse or not, but I think they probably will, and (tentatively, at least) they'll be part of the Jo/Amita 'verse, before Amita comes into the picture.

Title: Now You Know
Character: Jo Harvelle
Rating: PG
Summary: She ignores the pain.
Word Count: 100
Spoilers: None.
Prompt: 17. Scratch for my [livejournal.com profile] drabble123 Jo table.
Notes/Warnings: Unbetaed. Title from Every Little Bit by Patty Griffin.
Disclaimer: I don't own this character, nor do I profit from her use here. This is only for fun.

Just a scratch, just a scratch. She limps to the door of her room, resolutely ignoring the pain shooting through every step. Just a scratch.

The first-aid kit only takes a moment to find in her duffel bag. She sits on the lid of the toilet and looks warily down at her leg. Just...

Her jeans are heavy and dark with blood, ripped along with her flesh. They'll make good cut-offs in the summer, she thinks idly as she unbuttons them, carefully drawing them down over her thighs.

She hisses when she sees the gash. Just a scratch.

Oh god, JO! :hugs her: I think the thing I love best about this is that you get such a sense of how *strong* she is, how strong she has to be. She's a woman on her own, doing a job that is near-impossible for two big burly boys working together - I can only imagine what kind of courage that takes. And you show that side of her here.

Love it.

I'm SO glad that you saw it that way because, yes, that was pretty much exactly what I was aiming for. I love the balance between old and young, mature and immature, brave and scared that Jo presents.

Seriously, I can't even... I'm so GLAD that you like it. :-)

OOH! And you know the awesome thing? Amita somehow really *gets* how brave Jo is; how hard it is to do what she does, what it costs her. It scares the crap out of Amita, but she UNDERSTANDS, like maybe no one else ever has.

ALSO. I have this idea that... in her old room, at home, she maybe had a collection from her childhood--dolls or stuffed animals or a couple of old tutus from when she took ballet classes--and it all burned up, kind of thrusting her fully into adulthood instead of letting her find it herself, so she still has this streak of child in her that she tries to quash.

Oh yes! And she was kind of embarrassed that she clung to all that stuff, so she used to keep it in a box or chest or something and only get it out when she was sure she was alone.

so she still has this streak of child in her that she tries to quash.

YES! And sometimes she just wants to scream and stamp her feet because it's NOT FAIR goddammit but she knows this is simply how her life is, so she swallows it down and just gets on with things. Because what other choice does she have?

"Retire."

Cass, that's not fair.
"It worked for Dean."

very nice.

though trust Jo to understate (underthink?) wounds. I'd hug her if i wasn't afraid she'd gut me.

Thanks! In this fic Jo is all alone in the world, so half the reason she's understating it is so she can stay brave enough to not give up. Ahhhh poor girl.

Can you give me the link to that post at AO3?

Thanks! That remix was so long ago I kind of forgot it existed! And I am completely clueless when it comes to AO3, haha.
